How to vet an influencer before you pay them (5-step checklist)

Paying a creator is a bet. The whole point of vetting is to turn that bet into an informed decision. You do not need a fancy process, just a repeatable checklist you run every time. Here is the five-step version.

Step 1: check real engagement, not follower count

Follower count is a vanity number. What matters is whether the audience actually responds. Look at likes and comments relative to followers, and whether the comments are real and on-topic. Strong, genuine engagement on a small account beats a big silent one every time.

Step 2: check whether posts actually get seen

An account can have great engagement among the few people who see it and still barely reach anyone. Compare average views to follower count, and check consistency. A creator whose reach is boom-bust, one viral hit surrounded by flops, is riskier than one with steady numbers. You are buying the median post, not the best one.

Step 3: rule out fake followers

Before you go further, make sure the audience is real. Weak engagement for the size, sudden follower spikes, generic comments, and empty follower accounts are all red flags. We cover this in detail in how to spot fake followers before you pay a creator.

Step 4: check the fit with your product

Reach is worthless if it is the wrong audience. Does the creator's niche, tone, and audience actually overlap with who you are trying to reach? A smaller creator who is a perfect fit will almost always beat a bigger one who is a stretch.

Step 5: set a fair rate and make the call

Finally, anchor a fair price to the real views a post delivers, not the follower count, and decide: pay, free-seed first, or avoid. If the signals are strong and the fit is right, pay. If it is promising but unproven, seed a free product and see if it performs. If the numbers are weak, skip it. For pricing, see how much to pay a micro-influencer.

Turn the checklist into one click

This is exactly the workflow I built Scruta to automate. Paste any TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube handle and it runs these checks (engagement, reach, red flags, and a fair rate), then hands you a plain-language pay, free-seed, or avoid verdict in seconds. Vetting a creator should take seconds, not an afternoon.

Stop guessing what a creator is worth

Paste any TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube handle and Scruta gives you a fair rate estimate and a pay / free-seed / avoid verdict in seconds. Free to start.
